Ubuntu change hostname command The procedure to change the computer name on Ubuntu Linux: Type the following command to edit /etc/hostname using nano or vi text editor: sudo nano /etc/hostname Delete the old name and setup new name. Next Edit the /etc/hosts file: sudo nano /etc/hosts Replace any occurrence of the existing computer name with your new one. To check existing users in Ubuntu : cut -d: -f1 /etc/passwd   To Add User in Ubuntu : sudo adduser new_username or: sudo useradd new_username To remove/delete a user, first you can use: sudo userdel username To delete the home directory for the deleted user account : sudo rm -r /home/ username (Please use with caution the above command!)
